Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy
Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT),also referred to as biventricular pacing, is often recommended for patients with severe heart dysfunction and congestive heart failure (CHF). Nearly 30% of patients with congestive heart failure have an abnormality that causes the two ventricles (heart chambers) to beat out of synch, one after another, rather than simultaneously. This issue worsens the function of an already damaged heart.
At Hackensack University Medical Center, our electrophysiologists are employing CRT to resynchronize the two ventricles by pacing both chambers simultaneously. Through this procedure, the heart can pump blood much easier, improving the heart's overall efficiency fuction.
In addition, studies show that CRT can diminish symptoms such as shortness of breath, and improve exercise endurance and overall quality of life.
