This symposium is designed to provide internists, cardiologists, surgeons, nurse practitioners and other healthcare providers with a review of the current approaches in the treatment of cardiac and vascular disease to improve their knowledge base so that they may employ the latest approaches. This program will provide a review of the rapid changes in vascular heart disease, atrial fibrillation, ischemic heart disease, interventional procedures, structural heart disease, heart failure and valvular disease.

  • At the conclusion of this learning activity the participants should be able to:
  • Review the impact of healthcare reform and economics on physicians and their practice.
  • Cite indications and complications of catheter-based transaortic valve implantation in patients with aortic stenosis
  • Describe indications and management for mechanical ventricular assist devices (VADs)
  • Review the indications and contraindications for Extracorpreal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)
  • Describe new programs for cardiology input into the Emergency Department Management of Chest Pain
  • Review management of aortic, carotid, and peripheral vascular disease
  • Describe carotid stenting and its role in stroke
  • Review management of mitral and aortic valve disease
  • Describe trans-catheter aortic valve replacement
  • Describe the optimal management of lipid abnormalities for primary and secondary prevention of coronary heart disease
  • Review medical, catheter-based and surgical options for treating patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms, peripheral arterial disease and acute stroke
  • Differentiate the factors for selection of pharmacological and interventional approaches in the diagnosis and management of select cardiovascular and neurovascular diseases
